What is the Trinity of man?
According to the Oxford dictionary, Trinity is the three persons of the Christian Godhead or a group of three people or things.
Man as a living being is made up of three entities, that is, the spirit soul, and body.
Spirit: this is the non-physical part of a person which is the seat of emotions and character
Soul: The immortal part of the human.
Body: The physical structure, including the bone, flesh, and organ of a person.
Every part of the trinity of man is important and can't be underestimated.
The spirit is divided into three:
- Intuition: The ability to understand something without conscious reasons.
- Emotion: Psychological state brought on by neurophysiological changes, variously attached with thoughts, feelings, behavioral response, and a degree of pleasure and displeasure.
- Conscience: A person's moral sense of right and wrong, viewed as acting as a guide to one's behavior.
According to Plato in one of his works "The Republic", Plato believed there is a three partied soul namely:
- Logistikon: This is the part of the soul that loves logic and rational learning. It's wise and able to make just decisions. When this part of the soul is dominant, a person can distinguish between fantasy and reality.
- Thymeides: This is usually referred to as the most spirited part of the soul. It's this part of the soul that is responsible for emotions, particularly anger and temper. It's also where the desire to be good and to do good comes.
- Epithymetikon: This is the appetitive part. This is the part of the human soul that cannot resist appetite e.g food, power, and sex.
The body is also divided into three:

- Mesomorphic: This is the muscular body type
- Ectomorphic: This is the slim body type
Understanding the Soul and the Spirit
The Spirit and the soul are two concepts that are closely related yet very distinct from each other. Both came from the inner part of the human being Particularly his mind and maybe his heart. The soul is the spiritual part of humankind while the spirit is the faculty of thinking, reasoning, and applying knowledge.
The soul
According to Macmillan Dictionary, the soul is the part of a person that is capable of thinking and feeling.
A soul is also an entity that is regarded as being an immortal or spiritual part of a person, having no physical or material reality is credited with the function of thinking and choosing.
For science, the soul is synonymous with the mind due to how one can learn by studying the human brain, where our minds are located. Still, others believe that the soul is closely related to being alive, when a person is active, his soul is sleeping and when a person is sleeping, his soul is active through dreams.
It is difficult to give a correct definition of the soul since the definitions are based on a person's religious standpoint and attitude.
According to Buddhism, the soul which is also known as 'aatma' is the conscience of a living being, and when everything changes, the mental entity (anattama) also changes. When one dies, it's the soul that reincarnates in either physical or non-physical form according to one's karma.
According to Hinduism, the soul is called 'atman', is the true self of a person beyond identification with phenomena, it is the essence of an individual.
According to Christianity, the soul is a non-physical entity but integrally connected with the body. Its characteristics are described in moral, spiritual, and philosophical terms. Therefore it is what reaches God's judgment throne to face judgment.
The soul has more religious and spiritually significant.
According to Barry, the soul has seven(7) types:

Component of the soul
Aristotle classifies the soul into three parts in his work " virtue and the golden mean".
- Nutrition soul: According to him, nutrition is responsible for growth and reproduction.
- Rational soul: He also calls it the Logos. It's responsible for thoughts and reflection.
- Appetitive soul: It is responsible for desires such as sensation and mobility.
While Socrates and Plato agree that the soul is sub-divided into three parts:
- Reasoning soul
- Spirited soul
- Appetitive soul
Plato called the Reasoning part of the soul "Logistikon" according to him this part of the soul loves logic and rational learning. It's wise and able to make just decisions. When this part of the soul is dominant, a person can distinguish between fantasy and reality.
He called the Spirited part of the soul "Thymeides" It's this part of the soul that is responsible for emotions, particularly anger, love, and temper. It's also where the desire to be good and to do good comes.
He also called the Appetitive part of the soul "Epithymetikon" This is the part of the human soul that cannot resist appetite e.g food, power, and sex.
Witness Lee also divide the soul into
- The mind
- The will
- The emotions
According to him, the soul has three parts and all of these can be trans in the Bible. Prov 2:10 talks about the sweetness of knowledge to the soul, and to him, knowledge is the matter of the mind. Prov 24:14, Prov 19:21 also indicate that wisdom and knowledge are related to the soul.
Job 7:15 talks about choice and refusal, to choose and refuse. To choose and refuse are both decision and function of will. 1 chron 22:19.
Song 1:7, Ps 42:1 talks about Love as the function of the soul. 2 Sam 5:8 talks about hatred as the function of the soul. This proves that within the soul, there's an organ, the function of emotions.
The mind is subdivided into four parts:
- Thought: Allows an individual to shape the world and deal with it to achieve his goals, plans, dreams, and desires.
- Memory: The ability of a person to store, retain and recall information.
- Imagination: The ability of man to create ideas about certain things and experiences.
- Consciousness: Man's ability to preserve his relationship with others and his environment.
The Spirit
According to Daniel A. Helminiak and Bernard Lonegan, "human spirit is considered to be the mental functions of awareness, insight, understanding, judgment and other reasoning power". It is distinguished from the separate component of the psyche which comprises the entities of emotions, images, memory, and personality".
The husband's spirit includes our intellect, emotions, fears, passion, and creativity.
While according to Olaf Stapledon, the "human spirit consists of love, intelligence, and creative actions".
According to John Teske, the human spirit is a "social construct representing the qualities of purpose and the meaning which transcend the individual human".
According to the Cambridge dictionary, Spirit is a particular way of thinking, feeling, or behaving, especially a way that is typical of a particular group of people, an activity, a time, or a place.
While Oxford dictionary defines Spirit as a non-physical part of a person regarded as their true self and is capable of surviving physical death and separation. Therefore Spirit is what gives life to a body, it is our personality.
Spirit can also refer to non-human entities or spiritual beings, for examples Angels, demons, ghosts, Holy Spirit, etc.
The spirit has seven attributes namely:
- Wisdom is the act of utilizing knowledge and experience with common sense and insight.
- Understanding: The ability to assimilate or understand.
- Counsel: The ability to give advice or direction for a decision or action.
- Fortitude: Strength of the mind that enables one to endure adversity with courage
- Knowledge: The psychological result of perception, learning, and reasoning
- Piety: Righteousness under being pious
- Reverence for God: A feeling of great respect for God.
In Christianity, according to Witness Lee, there are three parts of the human spirit:
- Conscience: The ability to discern right from wrong, to justify or condemn. Rom9:1, Rom 8:16 Proves that the conscience is part of our Spirit.
- Fellowship: Fellowship simply means contacting and communing with God. This is shown in John 4:24 and Roman 1:9.
- Intuition: To direct sense or feeling in our spirit regardless of reason or circumstances. 1cor 2:11 indicates that our spirit knows what our soul cannot.
In the models of Daniel A. Helminiak and Bernard Lonergan, the human spirit can be split into five parts.
- Intellect: Knowledge and intellectual ability or a person who uses the mind creatively.
- Emotion: Any strong feelings
- Fear: An emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger. It can also mean great respect for something or someone.
- Creativity: The act of being creative or an ability to create.
- Passion: A strong feeling or emotion that is being channeled to a specific thing.

Mental health
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps in determining how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Mental health is always important at every stage of life, from childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
A healthy mind keeps the brain exercising regularly, and stress and worry are kept in a bay by choice, while positive thoughts, gratitude, and feeling of joy are present, and also a thirst for knowledge and learning.
As well as the brain requires sleep every night, it also needs things to think and ponder upon.
Physical health
Physical health issues the normal functioning of the body at all levels.
It's also a normal course of a biological process that ensures individual survival and reproduction. it also means the balance between the body function and the environment, participating in social activities and socially used works.
A healthy body is free from disease and illness and is not riddled with pain.
Bodily health is always made possible by a healthy diet, good nutrition, and regular exercise. A healthy body naturally wants to move and seek activity. Maintaining physical health requires keeping a regular check-up in the health center.
Spiritual health
Spiritual health includes a purposeful life, transcendence, and actualization of different dimensions and capacities of the human being.
spiritual health creates a balance between the physical, psychological, and social aspects of human life.
Being spiritual is centered on having the understanding that you are part of something much bigger than yourself. Facilitating a healthy spirit includes being part of a community to share yourself with others, and to give without expecting any tangible thing in return. A healthy spirit requires Love.
Why man's Trinity must be protected
We have been equipped with the ability to take care and protect our body, spirit, and soul just as man was given the task of tendering the garden ( From the biblical history of the genesis of man).
For clarity of the readers, I will like to treat this subtopic in chronological order.
Why man's spirit must be protected
From a Biblical standpoint, the Hebrew word for spirit is "Rauch", the feminine of the word "breathe".
Breathe is not just the air we take in and out but life. And spirit is also life.
It is therefore very important to guard, protect and shield it from harm, danger or loss, invasion, annoyance, insults, etc.
John Trudell, a native American musician and writer once said, "Protect your spirit because you are in a place where Spirits get eaten".
Countless times, people's spirits get eaten because they don't even know how vast their spirit is.
Synonyms for spirit

The spirit is not just our faculty of reasoning but our life as a whole. its behavior is what can be used in describing and defining us, therefore it is very vital to give it our attention.
Why Man's soul must be protected
The soul is a word for the invisibility of who we are on the inside.
The soul must be protected from dark forces and negative beliefs that are harmful to the soul. It has been proven that beliefs and negative thoughts cause Red light to the human aura ( Austral light and physical body )
White light gives a peaceful and soothing feeling to the soul while Red light causes restlessness and burning feelings to the soul.
The soul is the source of our achievement, therefore we must protect it.
Our soul is eternal, and will also experience everlasting joy and misery, it is, therefore, essential to protect it.
Why Man's body must be protected
The body is the carrier of man, anything that affects the body will also affect the spirit and soul of man.
Poor health habits can add stress to our life. Health problems, even minor once can interfere or overshadow other aspects of our life.
