Early Life and Education:
Jeremiah Timbut Useni, often referred to as "Jerry Boy," was born on February 16, 1943, in Langtang, Plateau State, Nigeria. He began his education at the Central Primary School in Langtang and later attended the Nigerian Military School in Zaria. His military education continued abroad, attending the British Army Apprentices College in Chepstow, England, where he obtained a Senior Certificate of Education, and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, India. He also completed various professional military courses, including the Young Officers Transportation Course in England and the Command and Staff College in Jaji, Nigeria.
Military Career:
Useni's military career saw him rise through the ranks to become a Lieutenant General. He served as the Military Governor of the defunct Bendel State (now Edo and Delta States) from January 1984 to August 1985. Later, under General Sani Abacha's military regime, he was the Minister for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and was known for his close relationship with Abacha, being rumored as a potential successor. His roles also included Minister for Transport and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army.
Political Involvement:
Post-military, Useni was actively involved in Nigerian politics. He was the Deputy National Chairman North for the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later joined the Democratic People's Party (DPP) as its president. In 2015, he was elected as a Senator representing Plateau South on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He also ran for the governorship of Plateau State in 2018 but was unsuccessful.
Controversies and Legal Issues:
Useni was embroiled in controversy, particularly regarding financial dealings during his time in high office. He was linked to corrupt practices, with significant amounts of money seized from his Jersey bank accounts under the name 'Tim Shani'. These funds were considered 'tainted', leading to legal battles where he tried but failed to recover the money.
Business and Property:
Useni was known for his extensive business interests, particularly in Plateau State, where he heavily invested in transportation, real estate, hotels, manufacturing and a lot more others . His business ventures included transport companies, real estate, and manufacturing.
Later Years and Legacy:
Jeremiah Useni passed away on January 23, 2025, at the age of 82. His death was mourned by many, with tributes acknowledging his significant role in Nigerian politics and military history. His contributions to the administration of Abuja and his political engagements left a notable mark on Nigeria's socio-political landscape.
Useni's life reflects a journey from military service to political leadership, marked by both achievement and controversy, illustrating the complex interplay of power, governance, and personal ambition in Nigeria's post-independence history.
