December 7th, 2021: What happened?

President Joe Biden of the United States has warned Russia that if it invades Ukraine, it will face broad economic penalties from the West.

As Moscow held security discussions with Western countries and increased its military build-up near Ukraine with fresh drills, the US announced on Wednesday that it has set out a diplomatic road to fulfill sweeping Russian objectives in eastern Europe.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US reiterated its commitment to respecting NATO's "open-door" policy while delivering a "principled and pragmatic review" of the Kremlin's concerns in a written answer to Russia's demands presented in person by its ambassador in Moscow.

January 3, 2022: What happened?

According to the White House, US President Joe Biden promised his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday that if Russia decided to strike its pro-Western neighbor, Washington and its allies "will respond decisively."

The two men spoke by phone just days after Biden met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the second time in a month, amid escalating tensions along Russia's border with Ukraine, where Russia has deployed 100,000 troops.

January 10, 2022: What happened?

Officials from the United States and Russia are meeting in Geneva for diplomatic talks, but tensions remain unsolved as Moscow reiterates security concerns that Washington refuses to accept.

January 24, 2022: What happened?

NATO raises the alert level for its soldiers and reinforces its military presence in Eastern Europe with additional ships and fighter jets. Non-essential embassy workers are being removed from Kyiv by some Western countries. The US has put 8,500 troops on high alert.

January 26, 2022: What happened?

January 31, 2022: What happened?

The United States and Russia disagree on the Ukraine situation during a special closed session of the United Nations Security Council.

According to US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, a Russian invasion of Ukraine would imperil global security.

Despite Moscow's repeated denials of an invasion plot, Russia's UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya accused Washington and its allies of inflaming the risk of conflict.

"Discussions about the threat of war are necessarily contentious. You almost seem to be pleading for it. "You want it to happen," Nebenzya replied.

February 1, 2022: What happened?

Putin denies that an invasion is planned and accuses the US of ignoring his country's security requirements.
"It's clear that key Russian problems have been disregarded," he remarked.

February 6, 2022: What happened?

According to unknown US media sources, Russia has completed 70 percent of the military preparations required to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

According to the Washington Post and the New York Times, during six hours of classified negotiations last week, key members of President Joe Biden's administration advised authorities that a fast seizure of Kyiv's capital is one of the most forceful choices.

February 8, 2022: What happened?

In Moscow, French President Emmanuel Macron talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and assures media that Russia would not worsen the situation in Ukraine.

The Kremlin, on the other hand, has disputed that Macron and Putin have reached a de-escalation deal. "Given the current atmosphere, Moscow and Paris cannot make any deals," said Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson.

February 10, 2022:What happened?

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss of the United Kingdom and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov meet in vain.
Lavrov described the encounter as "a talk between a mute and a deaf person" during a frosty press conference.

He went on to say that his team's "facts" on the issue "bounced off" their British counterparts.

Truss, who has warned of harsh Western penalties if Ukraine is attacked, pressed Lavrov on his claim that Russia's troop and armament buildup poses no threat to anyone.

February 11, 2022: What happened?

According to Jake Sullivan, Biden's national security adviser, US intelligence indicates that a Russian invasion may begin within days, before the end of the Beijing Olympics on February 20.
To reassure allies, the Pentagon has ordered the deployment of an additional 3,000 US troops to Poland. Meanwhile, several countries have urged their citizens to evacuate Ukraine, with some warning that a military evacuation will be impossible in the event of war.

February 12, 2022: What happened?

Biden and Putin communicate via video conference. The US president stated that a Russian invasion of Ukraine would result in "widespread human suffering," and that the West was dedicated to negotiation to end the problem, but was also "equally prepared for other possibilities."

In the call, Putin complained that the US and NATO had not answered adequately to Russian requests that Ukraine be barred from joining the military alliance and that NATO withdraws its forces from Eastern Europe.
Yuri Ushakov, Putin's top foreign policy advisor, said that while tensions have been rising for months, "the situation has simply been taken to the brink of absurdity" in recent days.

"This topic was not the emphasis during a pretty long chat with the Russian leader," he said Biden suggested prospective sanctions against Russia.
