How to Apply for an Opal Card

There are several ways to obtain an Opal card, contingent on which card you require.

Adult and child/Youth Opal cards are available at Opal retailers such as corner shops and newsagents, while concession cards must be applied for online.

An Opal card is free; however, a minimum top-up value of $20 for an adult card or $10 for a child or concession card is required at retailers or when using top-up machines.

When topping up online, you can choose between $10 for adults and $5 for children or concessions.

You can also use contactless payments instead of carrying an Adult Opal card. Single trip Opal tickets can also be purchased, but they are more costly than using an Opal card, and some stations, stops, and wharves do not sell them.

Opal cards that have been misplaced or stolen

If your enrolled Opal card is stolen or lost, report it and block it using the instructions below.

You can transfer the balance of your blocked card to another card if you have another card linked to your account.

How to Disable an Opal Card
